Abstract

Volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from petrochemical complexes represent a major environmental concern due to their contribution to atmospheric pollution, photochemical smog formation, occupational health risks, and greenhouse gas impacts. The present study investigates an environmental audit methodology for the systematic assessment of VOC releases in petrochemical facilities under industrial operating conditions. The research focuses on the identification, quantification, monitoring, and evaluation of VOC emission sources associated with storage tanks, process units, pipelines, loading operations, wastewater treatment systems, and fugitive equipment leaks. A comprehensive audit framework incorporating field measurements, emission inventory analysis, process evaluation, and risk assessment techniques was developed to determine emission characteristics and environmental performance. Experimental observations and analytical assessment demonstrate that fugitive emissions from valves, flanges, compressors, and storage infrastructure contribute significantly to total VOC release within petrochemical complexes. The study further evaluates the influence of operational practices, maintenance procedures, process efficiency, and leak detection programs on emission reduction performance. Results indicate that the integration of continuous monitoring systems, leak detection and repair strategies, and preventive maintenance significantly improves VOC management and environmental compliance. Comparative assessment with conventional inspection practices confirms that structured environmental auditing enhances emission tracking accuracy, operational accountability, and pollution prevention effectiveness. In addition, the methodology supports regulatory compliance and sustainable industrial environmental management by identifying critical emission hotspots and recommending corrective control measures.
