Abstract

Riparian wetlands located adjacent to industrial effluent discharge points provide critical ecosystem services that contribute to environmental protection, water quality improvement, biodiversity conservation, and ecological stability. The present study investigates the valuation of ecosystem services provided by riparian wetlands affected by industrial discharge activities, with emphasis on ecological functions, environmental benefits, and socio-economic significance. The research evaluates provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural ecosystem services through integrated environmental assessment and economic valuation approaches. Field investigations and ecological analyses were conducted to assess wetland capacity for pollutant retention, nutrient cycling, sediment trapping, flood regulation, carbon sequestration, habitat support, and groundwater recharge in industrially influenced regions. Results demonstrate that riparian wetlands play a significant role in reducing contaminant transport and improving downstream water quality through natural filtration and biogeochemical transformation processes. The study further reveals that industrial effluent exposure alters vegetation composition, soil characteristics, and aquatic biodiversity, thereby affecting the long-term sustainability of ecosystem functions. Economic valuation indicates substantial ecological and social benefits associated with wetland conservation and restoration when compared with the environmental and financial costs of ecosystem degradation. Comparative assessment with non-protected wetland systems confirms that effective management and pollution control strategies enhance ecosystem resilience and service delivery capacity. In addition, the findings highlight the importance of integrating ecosystem service valuation into industrial environmental planning and policy development for sustainable resource management.
