Waste activated sludge generated from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants presents significant disposal and treatment challenges due to its high organic content and resistance to biodegradation. This study investigates the effectiveness of ultrasonic pre-treatment for enhancing volatile solids destruction during sludge digestion processes. The research focuses on improving sludge solubilization, biodegradability, and digestion efficiency through the application of ultrasonic cavitation under controlled operational conditions. Experimental analyses were conducted to evaluate the influence of ultrasonic power intensity, treatment duration, sludge concentration, frequency, temperature, and energy input on sludge disintegration and volatile solids reduction performance. Results demonstrated that ultrasonic pre-treatment effectively disrupted sludge floc structures and microbial cell walls, leading to increased release of soluble organic matter and enhanced substrate availability for anaerobic digestion. The treated sludge exhibited significantly improved volatile solids destruction and higher biodegradation rates compared with untreated sludge samples. Kinetic evaluation revealed that cavitation-induced mechanical and chemical effects strongly influence sludge hydrolysis and subsequent digestion performance. The enhanced solubilization process also contributed to increased biogas generation and improved digestion stability during operation. Comparative assessment with conventional sludge treatment methods indicated that ultrasonic pre-treatment offers advantages such as reduced digestion time, lower residual sludge volume, and improved process efficiency. Furthermore, optimized ultrasonic operating conditions minimized energy consumption while maximizing treatment effectiveness. The findings highlight the potential of ultrasonic pre-treatment as an efficient and sustainable technology for sludge management and resource recovery in wastewater treatment systems, supporting improved environmental performance and operational optimization in sludge digestion applications.
