Abstract

Rapid urbanization and climate variability have significantly increased the frequency and severity of urban flooding, creating substantial challenges for stormwater management and urban infrastructure planning. This study presents a GIS-based flood risk mapping framework integrated with hydrological modeling for effective urban stormwater management planning. The proposed approach combines geographic information systems, rainfall-runoff analysis, terrain evaluation, and hydrological simulation techniques to identify flood-prone regions and assess stormwater behavior under varying rainfall conditions. Spatial datasets including land use, drainage networks, elevation profiles, soil characteristics, and precipitation records were incorporated into the modeling framework to improve flood risk prediction accuracy. Hydrological modeling was employed to analyze runoff generation, flow accumulation, peak discharge, and inundation extent across urban catchments. The integration of GIS tools enabled detailed spatial visualization of flood hazard zones and facilitated the evaluation of infrastructure vulnerability and drainage system performance. Simulation results indicated that areas with high impervious surface coverage and inadequate drainage capacity exhibited elevated flood susceptibility during intense rainfall events. The developed framework further supports the optimization of stormwater management measures such as retention basins, green infrastructure, and drainage network enhancement to reduce urban flood impacts. Comparative analysis demonstrated improved flood forecasting capability and decision-making efficiency compared to conventional assessment methods. The study highlights the effectiveness of integrating GIS and hydrological modeling for sustainable urban water management and resilient infrastructure planning.
