Abstract

Airborne particulate matter generated in chemical industrial corridors poses significant environmental and public health concerns due to the presence of toxic metals, organic compounds, and fine respirable particles. This study investigates the chemical characterization of airborne particulate matter collected near major chemical industrial corridors to evaluate pollutant composition, emission sources, and potential environmental impacts. A comprehensive sampling and analytical assessment was conducted using ambient air monitoring techniques to measure particulate matter fractions, including PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀, under varying meteorological and industrial operating conditions. Advanced characterization methods such as spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and chromatographic techniques were employed to identify the concentration and distribution of heavy metals, sulfates, nitrates, volatile organic compounds, and carbonaceous species present in airborne particles. The study further examined the influence of industrial emissions, vehicular activity, atmospheric transport, and seasonal variations on particulate matter composition and spatial distribution. Results demonstrated elevated concentrations of hazardous particulate constituents in areas located close to industrial discharge sources, indicating significant anthropogenic influence on local air quality. Chemical composition analysis revealed strong correlations between industrial process emissions and the presence of toxic inorganic and organic pollutants in ambient particulate matter samples.
