Abstract

Water consumption in pulp and paper industries is significantly high due to extensive process integration and continuous washing, bleaching, and cooling operations, creating major environmental and economic challenges. This study investigates the application of pinch technology for minimizing water consumption in integrated pulp and paper mill operations through systematic water network optimization and process integration. The proposed framework utilizes water pinch analysis to identify opportunities for water reuse, recycling, and efficient allocation within various mill processing units while maintaining required operational and product quality standards. A comprehensive process evaluation was conducted to analyze water flow distribution, contaminant concentration levels, freshwater demand, and wastewater generation across key production stages. Composite curve analysis and water cascade modeling techniques were employed to determine minimum freshwater requirements and optimal water reuse strategies under varying operational conditions. Results demonstrated that the implementation of pinch technology significantly reduced freshwater consumption and wastewater discharge by enhancing internal water recovery and process integration efficiency. The optimized water network also contributed to reduced energy demand and improved operational sustainability through minimized pumping and treatment requirements. Comparative analysis indicated substantial reductions in overall water usage and effluent generation compared to conventional water management practices in pulp and paper manufacturing systems. Furthermore, the integrated approach improved resource utilization, environmental compliance, and cost-effectiveness while supporting sustainable industrial production goals. The findings highlight the effectiveness of pinch technology as a strategic tool for water conservation and process optimization in water-intensive industries.
