The conventional Haber–Bosch process for ammonia production is highly energy-intensive and contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions due to its dependence on fossil-fuel-derived hydrogen and high-pressure operating conditions. This study investigates electrochemical nitrogen fixation as a sustainable alternative for fertilizer production using renewable energy sources under environmentally benign operating conditions. The proposed framework integrates renewable electricity generation with electrochemical conversion systems to enable direct nitrogen reduction and decentralized ammonia synthesis with reduced carbon emissions. A comprehensive experimental and analytical investigation was conducted to evaluate the influence of catalyst composition, electrolyte characteristics, current density, operating potential, temperature, and renewable power input on nitrogen reduction efficiency and ammonia production performance. Advanced electrocatalytic materials were developed to enhance nitrogen adsorption, electron transfer kinetics, and reaction selectivity while minimizing competing hydrogen evolution reactions. Performance evaluation demonstrated significant improvements in ammonia yield, Faradaic efficiency, and energy utilization under optimized electrochemical operating conditions. The integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power further contributed to reduced environmental impact and improved sustainability of fertilizer production systems. Comparative analysis indicated enhanced energy efficiency and lower carbon footprint compared to conventional thermochemical nitrogen fixation processes. Additionally, the electrochemical system exhibited strong potential for modular and decentralized fertilizer production suitable for distributed agricultural applications and renewable energy integration.
